How do you explain this from example?

                                          *
           *** * * *
       **** * * * *******
      *        *          *             *   ***
    ** ******* ****** ***
    1123333444323431111111233333331111112454222111

                                          ^
           ___ ^ / \
       ___/ \ / \ _______ | |
      / V | / | _| |__
    __| |______/ |_____/ \__
           444 4 3333333 5

check the 11233 patterns, sometimes you translate to

       __
      /
    __|

    and sometimes to

       __
      /
    _/

How about this in gen II?

    ..*..
    .....
    **...
    .....
    ...**

Or are the only possibilities the ones in the description? I find the lack of a specification in gen 2 unsettling.

Are you just asking about extra high cliffs? I thought the Kata desciption covers this case where it says:

Cliff characters | are repeated downwards to the lowest adacent ground level.

Cliffs may be higher than 2 units; in that case the same replacement rules as up/down 2 applies.

      it's apparent from sample tests

Description: "Base of cliff (on hill) up 2 down 1" is missing a * in the 4th column of AB-GEN-1

Very cool kata! I noticed a couple of irregularities in the character rules table:

    • up 2, down 1 in GEN-I is missing the . characters following the highlighted character
    • up 1, down 1 in GEN-II does not have the \ character highlighted
