Ranking & Honor
About
This is the place to talk about the Codewars kyu/dan ranking and honor systems, as well as other related elements such as leaderboards.
This relates to how users are awarded ranks and can earn honor points. For an explanation of how the system currently works see the Ranking & Honor docs article.

how much honour do i get from completing a 7 kyu when im rank 7 kyu
2 honor (The one you can see at top right of your screen).

channel on Codewars Discord.About your problem, you most probably confused rank progress points with Honor points. These are two separate metrics, but only Honor is visible in UI. For a blue kata, reward is 32 Honor points which, as far as I see, you were awarded correctly.
I think we should be able to see our rank score. Mine is currently 931, because I saw it from this link: https://www.codewars.com/api/v1/users/DavidJES If it's available from this link then why is it hidden on profile?
A mod in this very thread said that the ranked leaderboard is a lot more interesting than the honor, yet we can't even see our ranked score unless we go to awkward links? I don't understand why.
I'd like to be able to see my current rank score and score of next kata rank, like this:
931 / 1768
Hi, I submitted a solution of 1kyu problem that wasn't mine by accident and not only I didn't get the points but my points got reset. Can you please remove this solution from my solutions and restore my points?
oh wait i got it
um how do you join a clan. im new. :(
Progress Rank:8 kyu Honor:10 Total Completed Kata:21 """ WHAT IS THAT? 8 kyu with 21 completed kata... """
Hi, not that I am complaining, but two days ago I had 246 honor, then I solved two 6 kyu katas and all of a sudden my honor was 307 and I turned 5 kyu. What happened?
Hi,
You just ranked up. There is additionnal honor granted when that happens. Nothing special about that.
(Weird you didn't notice it when you ranked up 7 kyu then 6kyu before that ;) )
More info there
cheers
must you have a certain level of honour to join a clan ?
No.
@amirf147 , yo you fightin code honor??
I Solved Kata (https://www.codewars.com/kata/5635e7cb49adc7b54500001c/solutions/fsharp)
Why i recive 2 score? In then table (https://docs.codewars.com/gamification/ranks#awarded-score) i can see what i must recive 3 score
WHY??????? When i solved kata 2kyu(https://www.codewars.com/kata/55a4de202949dca9bd000088/train/fsharp) i too not recive full score
what happening this site
What you see on your profile is honor and that table contains progress score (responsible for your rank ex. 4 kyu) which on your profile is displayed as the wheel and its numerical value can be checked by calling API.
Thank you!
Hello, yesterday I spent about 6 hours to solve two kata ( https://www.codewars.com/kata/59a421985eb5d4bb41000031 and https://www.codewars.com/kata/5935558a32fb828aad001213 ). Ultimately, for the sake of convenience, I used the IDE to make it easier for me to edit the code and copied my solution to codewars, today after logging in, it turned out that the points I got for the solution disappeared, but the kata remained as "done". Please remove these kata from my Completed or return my points. If necessary, it will rewrite the code manually because I have a solution saved on the desktop.
I want to emphasize that, of course, I was using the internet, guided by how to solve this task - I do not want to hide it, but I did not copy the solution from the Internet.
Using IDE is always fine and it's never grounds for invalidation of a solution. This is fine. They could be invalidated by a mod for some reason, but the reason would never be using an IDE.
I will check what could happen to your solutions.
just remove these kata from my "complete" - they are not completely self-made solutions to be honest. I have suggested many things from others, so maybe someday I will come back to these tasks and do them more on my own.
If you could also delete this one https://www.codewars.com/kata/5e41c408b72541002eda0982 it would be great.
it was already invalidated (along with the two purples).
unfortunately, that's not possible (no tools to do so)
So I will never be able to get points for doing these kata anymore? that's not cool ;/
effetively, you won't.
now it seems unfair to me. I wanted to do these kata at another time again.
yesterday I spend about 6 hours to do them and today it turns out that I do not have a reward for complete and I will never be able to gain it again.
despite the fact that I spent a lot of time researching and doing this task, I shouldn't lose points for doing it. And I definitely shouldn't get a "ban" to do it in the future.
You aren't banned from doing the kata again. You merely just won't get the points when you do. You might think that is not fair, but was it fair for you to get the points in the first place, if the solutions were not all yours?
using stack overflow and google in everyday work is the norm for me. of course, I did not copy the solution from the internet.
I only googled my thoughts on how to solve particular problems, because I am not a genius, I am only a human being. And I don't translate my thoughts into code without any help from the internet or books. I use MDN or stackoverflow all the time, both helping others and looking for clues to deal with my own problem.
and this is what i wanted to say that maybe in the future i would somehow solve this problem without using books, the internet or directions from someone else. But take points from someone FOR NO REASON for completing the task. I admitted that I used information from the Internet to get to the solution, but I never said that I copied the solution. Hence my question now why the reward for solving the task has been canceled.
whatever this conversation is a waste of time anyway. it's all. have a nice day, thank you for the lack of explanation how my award was canceled. And thank you for accusing me of cheating.
I feel your pain dandrok. What is the great benefit of getting points here? Does it reward us in some way? Very new here.
Points are just points, they don't really get you anywhere. It's just that I am personally motivated by gaining "ranks", "points" etc. I like competetive.
I set up the topic only with an inquiry and curiosity - "what happened to my points".
Hello! Is there a way to remove a language from statistics? Since I want to keep things simple, I would love to delete Crystal (8kyu) from my stats. I had solved a Crystal kata (https://www.codewars.com/kata/reviews/5b33bf6ae3918a968b00151f/groups/5b500c9c7f3910625c00096f) a couple of years ago.
Hey everyone. I dont understand why 7kyu katas give me only 2 points except 3. I know that this kata is lower then my kyu, but there is no information about point reduce in CW docs. There is information about lower percentage award but it is understandable and logic.
I had 2909 points & %73.5, couple of days ago I noticed that they were reduced to 2878 & %70.5, previous solved kata weren't counted.
Here it said Blue code challenge completed == 24, Although I got about at least 26 complete valid solutions, Also it says 145 yellow katas were completed although I have 147. https://www.codewars.com/users/ShehabMuhammad/site-events
And you can you check the katas here, https://www.codewars.com/users/ShehabMuhammad/completed
Not only the last 4 kyu kata wasn't counted 32 points were deducted from my already existing points. Why this happened?
A couple of days ago, two of your solutions of blue kata were invalidated by a mod, that is why your rank slightly dropped. These are old solutions, from July 2020. All your recent solutions are valid and you still have points for them. In total you have a few (4 or 6 or so, would have to count exactly and it's not easy) solutions invalidated by a mod, most probably because they were recognized as copies from other solutions or somewhere from internet.
Could I know their names?
3 days ago I solved a 1 kyu kata and leveled up to 4kyu. Now these points are gone, I am back at 6kyu but the 1 kyu kata still shows up in my solutions. What's happening?
I'd have to check, but one possible reason is that the submitted solution was recognized as a copy of someone else's solution and points for it got withdrawn.
What kata was that? Was the solution originally yours?
It was Mine Sweeper. I am very sure the solution was mine. Worked on it a couple of hours during a week and didn't look at the solutions either. :)
try to avoid posting solution while you're not logged in, to avoid this kind of situation, next time.
revalidated & cheers
hi still having issues with kata not contributing to my rank i know someone said that i will not get points for the kata i have unlocked solutions for can you provide me with a compleate list of kata that i have unlocked solutions for so that i can make shore i am doing kata that contributes to my rank? it feels like its all the ones i gave up on / attempted and did not finish in the past
i am having an issue where i am compleating certan kata that get marked as compleate and then do not contribute to my over all rank, these kata are at my rank and below please help
Do you know what kata exactly would these be? I can see that you have unlocked solutions for a couple of kata ("MakeUpperCase", "Money, Money, Money",and two more), so you won't get points for them. Other than these, all your points are granted and I see that your points add up correctly.
If you think something is still wrong, please reach out to a mod on
#support-requests
channel of Codewars Discord.how do i see which solutions are unlocked?
Unfortunately, you can't. Moderators can. In your case, it's:
And maybe some other kata which you have unlocked, but have not submitted any solution yet.
how much honor does solving a kyu give (from 8 to 1 kyu)?
https://docs.codewars.com/gamification/honor
Hi, I solved a 1 kyu kata but I only got 2 honor for it?
hello,
you didn't "solve" the last one: you used a solution of another user. So the points got removed.
cheers
Thanks for the answer.
yeah, we know that ;) (you can edit your message to remove the reference, now, thx)
I didn’t know it was wrong. Thank you.
yesterday i completed 1kyu kata and had ~350 honor on my account. Now i have only 124 honor. Why?
cus you're full of it
I have had a look at the solutions, and you have pretty obviously copied a solution from another user, so I would say it is most likely that your solution was invalidated from your account. You are lucky you didn't get worse.
I just completed a 5 kyu kata and i only got 8 points which is the same amount i get when solving a 6 kyu kata :v
Yes.
(You DO get more rank progress for a 5kyu, than a 6kyu though. That is seperate from honour)
Damn!! I thought they were the same all this time. Now why'd they have to go and make it so complicated XD /s
You're at 4kyu so why are you doing 5 and 6?
Idk.Cuz i can??
@ansis m what's wrong with that?
Greetings, It seems as though my kyu is not incrementing after I submit solutions to kata that I have passed. Currently, I've passed eight kata and only have a total of 8 kyu even though each one is worth around 7. Why?
What kata have you passed? I can see that you solved only 4 of them:"Multiply", "Sum of odd numbers", "String ends with?", and "Vowel Count". I cannot see any other completions on your account. What kata are missing?
Hi, where can I find my rank according to my honor?
Your rank (displayed in a kyu/dan badge) is not directly related to Honor points. You can find some infomation here: https://docs.codewars.com/gamification/ranks#leveling-your-rank
I want to know where I stand among other users according to my honor. How to know that?
Here
Hi I didnt seem to get any credit for my last Kata, how do I check?
Which kata is that?
Everything seems to be OK with your points, have they appeared, or are some still missing?
I did Kebabize Kata, my rank didn't seem to move from last time, unless the increments are small when you go up the ranks
Curious about stats on my profile... it says the highest Kata I've trained is 4, but on my list of kata there's clearly a 1 sitting in the list. Bug?
it's not a bug and you are misinterpreting your stats. Highest trained means what language you have trained to the highest level, and not a level of the most difficultkata you have solved.
Hi, I solved a 4kyu kata. And I got 2 honors for it. I have reloaded the page many times. Updated honor's still not reflecting. Could you please take a look? Thanks!!
rarely, there might be a delay between the solve and the rewrd. I guess you got them in the meantime? (or sometimes, you just have to reload the page to actually see the update)
I got the honors.I'm sorry if I bothered you.I should have waited a bit.Thanks!!
How long did you wait? This had happened to me with a 4kyu last night. I saw my score increase by 2, which was twelve hours ago. I even whipped up a quick spread sheet to make sure I wasn't mistaken about my total honour. =D
So, as an update for anyone else that experiences this. My wait for a score update ended with the completion of another kata. A level 8 one in my case.
I guess we will have to manage our dopamine hit expectations. You know I can quit anytime I want... NEXT KATA!!
Hi, I'm learning a new language. So I've started with mainly 8 kyu katas. After a couple of days I'm ranked as 6kyu but I'm sure I am not in this level of knowledge.
Maybe the score provided by a kata must decay based on the number of previous katas solved in same ranks. So it is not the same the first solved 8 kyu kata than the 100th 8 kyu kata.
Or maybe set the katas like ELO system (from chess, o similarly from tennis). The score is based on your current level and the level of the kata. The rank increment will be increased more if the level of kata is more dificult than yours and the rank will be stagnated if the level of kata is lower than yours.
Hi, I solved a 4 kyu kata but I only got 2 honor for it?
The same problem. I solved https://www.codewars.com/kata/5ae64f28d2ee274164000118/python Thanks.
just reload the page
I did try reloading multiple times before and it didn't work, but I can see the honor's been added now, thank you.
yeah, rarely, there can be some delay. But generally it's only a cache thing, so reloading the page is enough.
Hi, I solved and submitted an kata yesterday but there are still no changes about my honor score.
Hi,
I guess you're talking about
Double Sort
?According to what I see in your profile, you forfeited that kata (meaning you unlocked the solutions page), so you effectively won't get any honor/progress with it.
Cheers
Okay good to know, probably I unlocked the kata by mistake. However you can see my solution is in fact different as the solutions. Never mind!Thank's anyway.
Why im solving katas and i dont get any honor?
because you forfeited the last 3. forfeit => no points.
Hi, in current moment I solving all 8 kyu Kata in Java. I'm complete 121 Kata, this number I can see in profile -> Kata. But on page profile -> Stats I can see only 96 completed Kata, and this number didn't change after solving next Kata's.
Can you see the message 'Next stats refresh in X hours' on your profile page?
Thank you, I got it.
Hi, similar to the previous post. I submitted Kata Simple Fun #27: Rectangle Rotation - 4 Kyu. My points went over 800 I checked other solutions for a while and now I realized that they went down to 775 points. Simple fun suposedly is a 4 KYu (55 points Kata). Now I have the feeling that something similar happended with other recent Katas. It looks like the U2 song "Stuck in a moment"
You encountered exactly the same issue as Toni_Mori below.
Sometimes it happens that when you solve a kata your points are correctly awarded, they get updated on the front end (that's why you see they rise), but backend cache fails to update - that's why they seem to disappear after refresh or navigation to other page. But it's related only to caching: your points are still there, and after some time, when cache expires, they will appear. You can also force recalculation of the cache by any action which modifies your honor: solve a white kata, or re-cast some satisfaction vote. It usually triggers recalculation of the cache and updates your points, making the missing ones to appear.
BTW a blue kata is worth 2 general points for solving a kata + 30 points for the blue rank + eventually 1 point for vote.
that's only one of those two things:
All your points are there and they always have been ;)
It looks like a cache issue. Now it appears correctly. Thanks guys!!!
Hi. I just endended the 4kyu-Sudoku Solution Validator which made me surpas 500 points but it decreased at 488 :C I have no idea why this happened, it could be because of making katas with an external app (visualStudio in my case) and copy paste the solution directly from there??
You got hit by an issue related to caching, all your points are there and should be visible now.
Solving kata in a local IDE is perfectly allowed.
Hi. Just solved a kata and after that I refreshed my stats page and my honor decreased from 156 to 148. I don't understand why it is happened. Whenever I finished a kata and submit it, I look for cleaner and neat codes of other users and I copy+paste as a second, third etc. solutions for later views, I hope this issue is not seen as cheat for website, since I thought all matters is your first ever solution. Any idea? Have a nice day.
Hello,
Just refresh the page, it should be good. As far as I can see, everything is "there". Can you please confirm?
I think it solved. Thanks.
Hi! When I solved my last kata (7 kyu Testing 1-2-3 (JavaScript)) my honor scores decreased. It is not clear why honor diminishes when I see the solution to this simple problem as such. What if my solution looks like others? In order not to diminish the honor, it is necessary to invent your own unique variable names, and not the generally accepted ones?
As much as I can see, nothing happened to your honor and all points you earned are still there. You have 47 kata solved (and awarded), and one forfeited (not awarded). The fact that your solution to "Testing 1-2-3" ended up grouped with another solution is not a problem in this case.
I believe that you probably misremembered your honor, and it actually got increased. Do you remember how much honor you had before it decreased?
was slightly more than 63%, and became 62.875%. This is not critical, but I want to understand what's the matter))
solved the problem again 7 kyu Well of Ideas - Harder Version The honor was 62.875% and became 61.825%. Why is my honor declining?
Don't worry, as far as I see, your honor is not declining.
First of all, the percentage you see is not Honor, but it's so called "rank progress". They are a little bit different, you can see some details on it here: https://docs.codewars.com/concepts/gamification/ .
Now, as to why the number decreases, I cannot tell you, because I do not know. I wold expect some issues with updating the values on the front-end. Do you see the difference between values on two separate tabs, or it's sometimes larger, and then smaller, in the same tab? Does it get back to larger value after some time?
As much as I can see, all your points are there and you are doing progress. Please check if the value gets back to normal after some time when viewed on the same or on a new browser tab, and not on some old one.
@Fedosnew: those percents are not your "honor points", but your honor percentile. If it decreases, it means you're going up in the "leaderboard" (even if you cannot see yourself there yet).
61.825%
means that 61.825% of all the users are ranked "above" you. The lower, the better. That is... if you care about that x)Cheers
Oh, so @Fedosnew meant the percentile all the time, and not progress. I did not think of it, and I should *facepalm*
I keep getting honor resets. The solutions show up in my account but it seems like the more katas I do, the worse it gets. Today not only I got the usual honor reset, my account went back to 7kyu! pls help, this is quite frustrating!
As far as I can see, your solutions were invalidated by a moderator because they were found to be dishonest copies of other solutions.
Can some one help? For some katas in the system i am having a problem. I do these katas succesfully and submit them then the screen comes which shows the solutions of other people and at this screen i click to option to see my solution but it says that i have no solutions for this kata but when i check my profile for a solution to that kata it appers to be. Can anyone help or explain why i cant see my solution in the page that comes just after submitting it(while i choose it to show my solution)? Also when this happens system sometimes give my honor points sometimes it doesnt. İf someone knows why these things happen some help would be great.
There is a known bug (reported here) which makes your solutions sometimes not appear on solutions page. But it usually does not prevent you from getting Honor. I will take a look and check if there's something wrong with your solutions, but I can already see that 7 of them failed grouping and do not appear on solutions page.
Make sure you submit final right after you submit your solution. I've noticed not doing it that way sometimes doesn't show my solution where you say.
thank you
i switched to rank 6 kyu when i reached 130 honor points now i'm at 169 how much more to 5 kyu? even an estimate is fine
Your rank is not exactly based on Honor. How quick you reach 5 kyu depends on how difficult kata you solve. Some info can be found here: https://docs.codewars.com/concepts/gamification/ranks/#leveling-your-rank
But you can generally observe your rank progress circle in your profile so you will know how far from 5 kyu you are.
I've got to rank 5 kyu when I was around 310 honor, and that was doing mostly 8 kyu problems with a sprinkling of higher level problems.
hi everyone, pls how do i join a clan, i need "rivals" so i can be challenged to code better, also pls follow me if you can(ill follow back),im thinking thats how a clan works but im not so sure...
Please see if this part of docs is of any help.
How much honor points to 4kuy?
Ranks are not exactly honor based: https://docs.codewars.com/concepts/gamification/ranks/#leveling-your-rank
Do you know where Do I get the referral link?
Hey! Anybody knows how many users are totally in the Codewars? I can't find that information. I would like to enter in the top 500 to screen that info and put that in some place, like wallpaper (I'm not joking). Thanks to everybody, ciao.
In your profile you can see you current position is 2151, and your honor percentile is 0.8%.From this, you can estimate amount of users as approx. 268k. I am not sure if it's any meaningful number though. Many accounts are abandoned, some are banned, some are irrelevant in some other way. Also the leaderboard of overall honor is not very meaningful either.
Completed kata leaderboard is much more interesting.
Thanks! (Before I didn't understand what 'honor percentile is 0.8%' means)
We don't include users with honor less than 128 to the leaderboard because there are a lot of them. Banned accounts are removed from the leaderboards as well.
For the actual number, we have slightly over 2M registered and had about 50K new users per month on average in 2020.
I have 56 honor, but I am still 7 kyu, is this link out of date? https://github.com/Codewars/codewars.com/wiki/Honor-&-Ranks
Not sure if we're seeing the same, but those are bonus points you gain for reaching that level, not the honor points at which you gain that level. I mean these: https://github.com/Codewars/codewars.com/wiki/Honor-&-Ranks#honor-points
You must check this other table: https://github.com/Codewars/codewars.com/wiki/Honor-&-Ranks#leveling-your-rank
Perfect! That's just what I was looking for. Thanks for the quick reply
I would like to clarify that honor points and the rank score are two different things. You need to gain 26 rank score points to reach 6 kyu.
No, monadius is right, check this:
He has a score of 50, and needs 26 to reach 76 and get 6kyu level. Honor points and rank are different things.
oops, 'misread the beginning of the sentence, sorry
yesterday was a 2kyu around 3800 honor points. I then connected my laptop to my tv and the next thing I know, I am to a 4kyu with 900 points. I thought it was a glitch so I sent an email. I still have not heard back
Hello,
No, that’s not a glitch. We (the Codewars moderation team) can't disclose the details for obvious reasons, but we track how you complete kata and flag suspicious events. Then we invalidate the progress after reviewing them if completions are invalid. For repeated offenders, we ban the account itself.
Your account has been studied and numerous evidences of plagiarism have been found. As a consequence, solutions got invalidated and this account has been filed for a ban. This decision is final.
Note that we don't flag unless it's obvious because there's no way to review every submission. This means your activities were clearly unusual to begin with. Try to think what might have caused it and don't do it again if you create a new account (of course, you perfectly can).
Regards
How would he get those points back? Considering if this ever happened to me.
Considering the fact that the user got banned, if the same thing ever happened to you, you'd have worse things to worry about than lost points :)
Just do not let this happen to you, and all will be good.
I write in python.Usually i have made functions when solving katas, but in the last i tried i only got: regex = "" to start with.
The sample test is rendered like this: Test.assert_equals(bool(search(regex, 'fjd3IR9')), True)
I assume i am going to print the answer, but how im I going to get input when not using a function?
Please write in that kata's discourse, here it's off-topic.
In such situation you indeed cannot print the input, that's why it's important that kata author should provide enough information to debug the solution when test case fails. If you get failed tests without any feedback on input or anything what went wrong, you can suggest improvements or raise an issue in the kata discussion section.
I recently read that codewars frowns upon copying and pasting code when solving Katas. I've been coding in Jupyter Notebooks to test my work then copying it into codewars before testing/submitting. Does this affect my ranking? If so I will definitely start re-typing my code into codewars to avoid this.
Not that copy/pasting was meant. That was about copy/pasting of other user's solution from internet or codewars.
It's not what is meant by copying and pasting being problematic in context of Codewars. Working in local IDE is perfectly OK, and by some (for example me) strongly recommended way of working with kata.
If you use your account to read the kata, grab the initial solution and tests from the trainer, solve the kata in your IDE and then paste it back into the trainer to submit, it's perfectly fine, you do not need to retype anything.
how do i get higher ranks faster
Solving harder katas.
and after completing katas rate them you will get 1 point for approved and I think 2 for betas
Voting kata grants additional honor points, but does not increase your kyu rank. You can advance your rank only by solving kata.
let duel with me bruh :v
For every question i solve, Honor Percentile decresses. Why?
That means you're in a smaller upper group.
thanks for the attention. can you ellobrate it please
It means you're in top X % of all users.
Hello, if i solved a kata then i want to know solution in another language, that will affect my honor?
No, but don't copy/paste the solutions in the trainer. Incase, if you want to analyse the solution, click on "Fork" and then "Run".
of course no, just want to know how it work in different language. btw thank's for the answer, i appreciate it :)
You can solve kata in different languages. That won't affect your honor or your overall rank, but that will increase the rank for those languages, yes. XFRXLP is talking about trying solutions of other users in the language you already solved (and so, to not try them in the trainer but to use the fork panel)
Some readings about rank/honor
glad to hear that, thank you :)
Yesterday I had a score about 4900 points (determined through the codewars API) and Python rank of 2 kyu, then I decided to do a few 8 kyu Python kata for speed, and now I have a score of 3888 and rank 3 kyu in Python somehow. What happened? Were any katas that I solved were rerated? Or is it a bug?
Hi,
That is matching the 1 kyu that got invalidated because you used the solution of another user. No bug, nothing anormal, nothing to do with solving 8 kyus.
Cheers
Do you mean the "Skyscrappers 7 x 7"? But there I independently solved a simpler version of the problem "Skyscrappers 6 x 6", and after the solutions of it had been opened to me, I used the solution of another player to solve a more complex version of the problem, because it turned out to be universal, is that not fair? I did not used any spoilers.
Yes, the 7x7 one. The idea is: you just copied/pasted the solution of another user so you actually didn't have to do anything to earn those points, hence they are considered invalid.
It is pretty obvious it is an isolated thing, for you, so you can go on like usual, don't worry. Just know that this kind of behaviour is frown upon and
mightwill lead to some invalidations when encountered, yes.Cheers
Note to other copycats (not relevant for you, Alexzunder):
No, moving around functions, changing var/function names or adding/removing comments to only deduplicate your solution from the original one isn't any different from "just copied/pasted"...)
Thanks for your reply. The rule seems pretty clear.
But, the question remains about similar katas that have a simpler version, whose solutions are also suitable for complex ones - it turns out that we need to somehow artificially and creatively change the solution that has opened to us in order to apply it to a more complex version of the kata or not look at the solutions at all, am I right?
I also did not receive any automatic notification that my solution was rejected, which would be extremely useful - just for knowing what happened with my score.
Thanks again for your time.
Yes, you're "sort of right". It might seem a bit weird, I agree. The problem is rather that we have users who solve easier kata with generic solutions, allowing this to happen...
notifications: unfortunately, this isn't implemented so far. It could be useful in your case, yes, but I'm not sure it will be done (you're kind of an "exception", actually. Other users whom it's happening generally perfectly know the how and the why of it)
Ok, now I will know about this feature, thanks, Blind4Basics.
a question , and sorry if im maybe the 2344324 person asking it:why is it that u get same amount of honor for different kyu? (7,8) (5,6) and so on ? its a different difficult level.. Thanks
just because... that's the way it is.
But completing kata, you get honor and progress in addition (progress is what is conditionning your rank, not honor). And progress gained from different kyu levels are different. You can find more info there: https://docs.codewars.com/concepts/gamification/
Hello, I am new, so I accidentally began doing some kata in languages I don't know yet. Is there a way to "unwatch" those kata (so that they do not appear in "Unfinished Kata")? Otherwise, it is only a slight issue; I just feel like I have to do finish it if it shows I started it.
Unfortunately, no. There's no other way to get rid of unfinished kata other than completing them, but you can solve them in any language. However, they are not a very big problem. They do not influence any of your stats, they do not change anything, they just trash your "Unfinished Kata" list. It's difficult to clean up and they will pile up with time, and for example, I have currently ~220 of them.
if u finish and kata in language 1 then u get honor if u finish the same kata in langugage 2,do u get honor again?
@bluiisdave No, you don't get honor for finishing a kata in multiple languages. You also don't get general rank progress for doing the same kata in multiple languages. However, you do get rank progress for each individual language for completing a kata in multiple languages.
About an hour ago I had like 1,100 honor and after I did another Kata, it dropped me down to 4kyu and deleted my honor, sending me back down to 675. Why did this happen and how can I fix it?
don't cheat?
I didn't. I did all the work in a separate IDE. Does the system think I just copy pasted?
yeah, copying solution on a separate IDE. You know, that count as cheating too.
Even if I coded it myself?
errr.... like...? you didn't copy/paste and you typed it by hand?
I cannot really make sense of what you're telling, sorry.
@Blind4Basics
Please communicate more professionally and avoid confusions. We've already discussed about this privately. You're a moderator now. If you can't, simply don't reply and let others handle it.
@TheCoolCoder509
You can't. Your progress has been invalidated and you can't get that back. The decision is final.
We can't disclose the details for obvious reasons, but we track how you complete kata and flag suspicious events. Then we invalidate the progress after reviewing them. For repeated offenders, we ban the account itself.
Note that we don't flag unless it's obvious because there's no way to review every submission. This means your activities were clearly unusual to begin with. Try to think what might have caused it and don't do it again.
Just to be clear, using local IDE and pasting the solution you wrote is not cheating.
@kazk: noted.
Oh, that's what he meant? That didn't fit in my mind, sorry.
I don't know. I didn't think of any other interpretation when I wrote that. If they meant they had a separate Codewars IDE open in another account (including guest), then that's an unusual activity they should stop. It's very suspicious, but it's not cheating by itself.
I sometimes open up a second browser to see the initial solution and the simple test suite as guest. For me this is the way to find out about the initial solution without adding the kata to my unsolved katas list.
I presume that a kata is brought to the unsolved katas list the moment the "Train" button is clicked. If this could be changed to the event of clicking on either "test" or "submit" button on the train page, opening a seperate browser is no longer necessary.
Regards.
You can get honor from many ways including achievments. But is there a way to check what the Achievments are?
Did you find an answer to this? I was looking too and having no luck.
Documentation is still work in progress, but you can find some details here: https://docs.codewars.com/references/gamification/honor/
I'm not sure what you mean by achievements, but if you want to see where all your honor came from (which includes achievements), you can go to https://www.codewars.com/users/YOUR_USERNAME/site-events. Replace
YOUR_USERNAME
with your actual username.Note that use of site events page is strongly discouraged though.
hi, im wondering about the points system, i finished a kata ,kyu 5 and got some points, i think befor solving it i had 2163 or 2153 and then after i solved it i had 2171 but then it got down to 2165, does anyone know if it is a bug or what is it? also some times when i solve some katas lets say kyu 7, i get 2 points and sometimes its 3, this is how its suppose to be? is it a bug? thanks for any respond!
so for this one, I read the wiki and it says that performing Kata at different levels gives you different amounts of honor depending on what rank you're currently at
"When a kata is completed, you always received a set amount of honor points based on the level of the kata as well as an internal score that counts toward your next rank. Since every rank requires a higher score than the last, Completing an easy kata well below your current rank will result in little progress. However completing a hard kata above your current rank will give you much more progress towards leveling up. As such, completing a lot of low level katas will give you a lot of honor, but will not increase your rank very quickly. Completing more hard katas will level your rank faster."
Codewars docs are not yet complete, but hopefully this section can help explaining some things.
How would one join a clan? I don't see instructions on creating or joining a clan, just that you can
Me too but I found in the account settings you can name your clan and if you have the same name clan with someone and you follow each other. Automically you two will become an allies. When you have an ally you can see their progress in the home page.
you must higher than 4 kyu
Hello, could you please add a functionality to the 'my profile' page so that one could sort solutions by difficulty?
That functionalty already exists on the Kata menu, you can make the search of the ones that has already been completed (status) and then sort by difficulty.
Why don't you gain more honor for completing a problem you have already solved in a different language?
I guess its because you already know the solution, implementing it in another language would not be that difficult
You are still awarded with language progress for every language you solve a kata with. But Overall progress and Honor are awarded once per kata, because once you know the solution, there's no point in being awarded for it twice.
Hi everyone, Does the difficulty of a kata you complete influence your stat? meaning the harder the kata the more points you are awarded, or is it the same and it´s all about the quantity of katas you complete?
There are two things you have to distinguish: your Honor (currently 402 points), and your rank (currently 5 kyu). These two are independent.
Rank of solved kata influences several things:
While amount of Honor is fixed for every rank, the amount of your rank progress is relative to your current rank. So, for example, when you are 4 kyu and solve 4 kyu kata you get more honor, but as many progress % as when you are 5 kyu and solve 5 kyu kata.
https://github.com/Codewars/codewars.com/wiki/Honor-&-Ranks
Amazing, thanks a lot @hobovsky and @rge123
On an user profile, what does the
Contributed Kata
stat mean ?It means how many kata the user contributed to in some way.
Most common way of contributing to a kata is to provide a translation, but not the only one.
So contributed katas = translations accepted + katas directly edited + katas approved ? (not counting the authored ones)
Coming up with exact formula can be difficult, because mechanism of contributions changed over the time, and additionally was affected by various issues. For example, in the not so distant past, approving a translation did not make one a contributor, and the fact that approvers become contributors is probably a bug.
yeah i suspected so, I asked precisely because the stat seems to be broken/inconsistent
Hi, guys. I had 5th rank and 99,8% overall progress. After i have soluted that kata https://www.codewars.com/kata/5265b0885fda8eac5900093b, but rank wasn't upping. Where is a problem?
Sometimes there's some delay until points are added. Just wait a couple of hours and if you still don't get your points, raise an issue on CW github.
Thanks, i understood. I have submitted solution that task yet in Tuersday. So obviosly its bug.
please don't post your solution on github, that's forbidden.
OK, there is only description of kata.
Description in 372 lines?
@SubtRose: if you wanna archive your katas solutions on github, store them in a private repo. We have already enough troubles with morons who are just stalking github for solutions...
I thought you are talk about my link, not repo. Good, it will be done, i really didnt know what there are such troubles.
I ranked up to 6kyu without ever doing any 6kyu kata. And those are too hard for me, but now the only katas that are proposed to me are 6kyu or 5kyu so I cannot do the suggested kata. The only way to pick a kata that is appropriate for my current Python knowledge is to pick it manually through "Kata" butto which is not ideal.
Is this some kind of error, tha fact that I ranked up without wanitng to? Is there any way to de-rank me? I don't want to have to create another account just so I can train comfortably.
you ranked up because you earned enough honr. don't worry about it, you can just do whatever kata you want.
I know, but like I said it's not comfortable to pick them manually vs just doing whatever kata is being suggested and I don't want to do it this way. It means that to use this site the way I like I have to create a new account every couple of weeks which seems stupid but if there's no other way it seems like it's my only option.
If you know any websites simmiliar to CW without such stupid system please let me know.
It's unlikey anyone makes a habit of creating a new account simply for the sake of their kyu suggestion comfort... by that logic, this site does not realistically operate by this fairly stupid system that you have suggested because it's very easy to select your kyu and language and just start coding. Thousands of challenges at your level await you, at your very fingertips. Best of luck!
It's already my second account, I did one 6kyu on my previous one and I ranked up (I thought you have to do harder kata to rank up but now I know that you can just do a lot of easier ones). And as I said, what you're proposing is not comfortable for me. I prefer discomfort once in a few weeks than every time I complete kata.
Really, you can do it however you wish. If you are learning, that's all that matters, and this site offers a great deal that can help you develop you skills.
And why can't you pick a kata manually which you think would be best for you?
Unfortunately, I am not aware of any system which would read user's mind with acceptable accurracy :(
I don't need it to read my mind, I need it to give me harder tasks when I want to work on harder tasks, right now I need repetitive tasks of 7kyu difficulty. I can already feel that it takes me less time to solve them than some time ago so I want to keep up the pace and just shoot 7's one by one.
I'm not neurotypical so miniscule stuff like that tends to have a lot of meaning for me, that's why I prefer to create another account than to deal with manually picking katas.
Just click on katas. Then, onthe left hand side, there is difficulty. Click 7kyu in your case, and there will be thousands of 7kyu katas for you to practice.
Did you try to set your trainer to "Practice and repeat" mode, instead of "Rank up"?
@Hunahpu2
No, it's not an error. You rank up once you gain enough internal score (not honor which is the number shown at top right). I believe you can do some 6 kyu if you try, but you're free to keep doing 7 kyu.
No, but I'll consider adding a new training mode that suggests kata in a specific rank.
(The code for kata suggestion is super complicated and I haven't touched it since I inherited the project so it might take some time.)
Does anybody know how CodeWars' algorithm for suggested Kata on your front page works?
When I first started it seemed as if CodeWars was challenging me by giving me a kata that was ranked one better than what I was currently at (giving me a 6 while I was a 7). I then stopped frequenting the site as often (maybe every 3-4 days instead of everyday) and now it is doing the opposite. It is suggesting katas one below my current rank (giving me a 6 when I am a 5). The one obvious thing to me is how frequently I visit the site. Does anybody know if this plays a role? If not, what does?
I know I could simply search for Katas that are my rank or higher to challenge myself. I am just curious and would like to know if there is something I am missing here or if CodeWars has a logical reason for slowing down how hard they are challenging me.
Thanks!
One thing trainer suggestions are related to is recently trained language: you are suggested kata which are available in this language, and kata of suggested rank is somehow relative to your rank for this language. Another thing is probably "training mode" selected in "your next challenge" area: "rank up", "Practive and Repeat", and a couple of others. Exact formulas are not well known, and actually not many people find trainer suggestions useful. With a simple search with filters which suit you, you will probably find some nice kata easier.
Thank you!
how can i lower my rank,i signed up for codewar today and i am already at 8kyu those things are tough for a begineer. Thanks
8 kyu is already the lowest rank, very beginner. If you solve some tasks you will advance to 7 kyu, then 6 kyu, and so on. If tasks suggested by site suggestions are too difficult for you, you can use kata search page and use filters to select other, easier tasks for you.
Does Creating Katas give you Honor?
From the wiki : https://github.com/Codewars/codewars.com/wiki/Honor-&-Ranks
More info here Honor-&-Ranks
The previous user updated his message with same link, so mine became irrelevant, but I can’t delete it.
okay thanks a lot!:)
I would like to post some of my more interesting or useful solutions to Kata in a repository on GitHub. I would change the function names to make it more difficult to search for them. Is that acceptable?
can't you just make the repository private ?
I think when this user posted this Github didnt allow that for free yet. Its a recent change to do it free.
Is 2nd Dan the highest rank? Because the wiki only lists required scores up to 2nd Dan, but the about page shows that 3rd and 4th dan are possible. What happens after 2nd dan?
Maybe it's an easter egg because there are no codewarriors having reached that score yet ;-)
I have analyzed the score requirements and it seems to roughly follow a 11.7 * exp(n) law. So 3-dan should require approximately 260,000 score. There are only two 2-dan codewarriors currently and they're far from that treshold, with 120,000 and 160,000 respectively.
Kyu/Dan rank is not calculated from honor points. Kyu rank is calculated from internal score earned only by solving kata. Highest technically possible rank is 8 dan, but there's simply not enouh kata to reach it at the moment. Some details on dan ranks can be found on CW github forum.
Can anyone say me, where i can see list of achievements?
From the wiki : https://github.com/Codewars/codewars.com/wiki/Honor-&-Ranks
Is it possible to reach a very high grade like 1 kyu by only doing 8 kyu katas?
Short answer, no.
As the wiki says, each 8 kyu gives 2 internal points towards your rank. At the time of my reply, there are about 470 8 kyus on the site. That means that doing all the 8 kyus will give you about 940 points.
This is far from enough; you can only reach 4 kyu (643 needed). 3 kyu needs 1829 points.
Hey,i decided 4 kue on python ,but my highest trained not change
The Highest Trained stat is related to the language you have the highest rank with, not to the highest ranked kata you solved.
I solved a kata of 5 kyu but my honor increased by only 8 instead of 21. why? can anyone tell why is this happening everytime?
I'd also like to know the answer to this. I receive 8 honor for katas of 5 kyu and 6 kyu.
21 is the internal points you get for rank progress. You get 8 honor for solving yellow katas (5 and 6). The points displayed is honor.
I recently completed an 3kyu kata "Alphabetic Anagrams" . As per the codewars Ranking & Honor . My score should have been increased by 149. But instead it increased by ~28. Please let me know the reason for it.
149 is the internal points you get for rank progress. You get 32 honor for solving blue katas (3 and 4 kyu). The points displayed is honor.
What is the maximun times for me to unlock solutions? Is there a limit?
Infinite; you can at most unlock solutions of katas one rank above you (or lower rank)
Does a beta kata give any rank? If so, how much does it give?
Hey, I was just reading about the ranking system here: https://airtable.com/embed/shrDt7USqZ7GStRb0/tbly10FthXIRqbd7L/viwJf0lpHrvPCKNfb?blocks=hide (I followed the "Ranking and Honor" link above).
Under Beta Kata Completed, it says: "Once the kata is ranked you will also earn honor associated with that rank."
Also, according to this chart, you receive 2 honor for completing a kata in beta and 1 honor for assessing and ranking a kata in beta.
Resolved - the docs recently specified clearly that betas give 2 additional honor, recent update. So a beta gives 4 honor in solving and 2 honor in feedback. (rank assessment and satisfaction rating)
Where is my clan page/ranking? It doesn't seem to be in the leaderboard tab anywhere. Thanks.
AFAIK there is no clan page, and your clan has only one member right now, when there is more than one or if you follow and are followed by someone (you become ally with that person) you can see a ranking in the homepage, it's one of the first blocks, called Allies.
Ah, that makes sense. Thanks a lot!
Please, how can I join a clan?
You just need to edit your profile and write down the name of the clan you wish to join.
Total completed katas vs Completed kata (in profile page) What's the difference between these two, I have completed 46 katas in total but my profile shows: Total completed Katas : 13 Completed katas(46) Don't get it, Can anyone reply?
The first is the number of Katas you have completed, the second is the Honor you earned for solving these Katas. HTH
Makes sense, but I bet I have completed more than 13 katas
Thanks.
You've solved 14 katas until now: https://www.codewars.com/users/shieldme/completed The stats refresh periodiocally (right now it says you've solved 13, next refresh should show 14 if you don't solve any more until then).
Thanks everyone
how do I join an allegiance to measure up with others in a ranking? I don't have friends that use this website
Me too, anyone knows where I can compare myself in a leaderboard of sorts?
if i try a higher ranked kyu challenge and the test output show that the "actual" matches the "expected" results exactly but the tests still fail, who do I ask for help as I cannot post on a higher kyu challenge?
Shame on me: I looked up a solution to a 2kyu kata that I've been trying to crack for about 3 hours. I copied the solution and wanted to reverse-engineer it since it was in JS (and I was trying with Python), but since I pressed "Attempt" instead of running sample tests, I was granted a load of undeserved points for the kata. I should be at 4kyu at the time of writing this, not 3.
I know my approach can very much be considered cheating, and I don't want points for the solution. Is there a way to forfeit the already submitted solution and the awarded points? Will it get automatically marked as cheating if the system sees me passing a 2kyu kata after attempting to do it for a long time in an entirely different language?
The kata in question is [https://www.codewars.com/kata/5908242330e4f567e90000a3](One Line Task: Circle Intersection). I was desperate for any clues regarding shortening the python code (the kata enforces a pretty strict code length limit), but I couldn't get the syntax to cooperate.
I think there is no way to get rid of your earned honor. Don't mind about it. You are on the right track, when you are interested in your real progress and not in only your rank. At least it is a good prerequisite to really become better by practicing. A lot of desperate coders are searching for solutions on the internet resulting in nearly copied codes. If you try to learn from it, i think it is ok.
Hi, my honor percentile ranking has gone from 13% to 37% overnight, anyone know why?
We've increased the minimum honor points required to be in the leaderboard. So the number of users below your position has decreased by a lot. The honor percentile describes your position within the leaderboard.
We're still experimenting with the numbers so this might change again in the future.
I'm curious what the rationale is behind this change. Although I mostly compete for the sake of practice and intrinsic fun, I have noticed that the recent change often results in my leaderboard position increasing (that is, I move further away from the top spot) with each additional kata I complete. That is quite odd behavior, to say nothing of its effect on motivation.
To give you better perspective, I earned 80 additional honor since the time of the recalibration (i.e., over the past half-day or so), and in that same time, my leaderboard position has steadily increased (moved away from the top) by more than 350 spots.
@JasonMRoos That is very strange. My leaderboard position goes closer to the top. For example, my leaderboard position recently went from about #302 to #299. I don't know what is going on in your case.
The rationale behind the change was that we had a huge number of mostly inactive users in the leaderboard. Also, I had to rebuild the leaderboard after replacing the database service provider and thought it was a good time to experiment and significantly reduce the load.
Like I wrote above, I'm still experimenting with the numbers. I'll probably change it back to what we had soon. This doesn't affect anything except for the leaderboard percentile shown on profile. And it's obvious now, but I didn't really think how extreme the change is for some users with lower position.
The change doesn't affect the position (unless you're now out of the leaderboard). Maybe rebuilding the leaderboard corrected some data issue or included some of the old users that was left out for some reason.
@Steffan153
I don't see anything strange in your case. Currently the leaderborad looks like:
It's very likely that you just gained enough honor to move up. You can easily get 50 points over night, like multiple kata you've solved in the past got out of beta or your translations were approved.
Oh, the "I don't know what is going on" was replying to the other person. Sorry for the confusion.
The person at position #13 in the leaderboard is inactive 🤦
I meant those that signed up, solved few kata and never came back. Not just currently inactive, but never really active.
Many of the currently inactive users near the top are there because they contributed to make Codewars what it is today by creating kata during early days. How the current default leaderboard is implemented is debatable, but I'm not going to discuss that here.
How much honor is needed for 1 kyu? I have 3,537 honor but I've been stuck on 2 kyu for a long time. How do I progress?
Your rank is based on how many katas you complete and which rank those katas were, nothing else.
At 2 kyu you will recieve 20% progression towards 1 kyu by completing a 1 kyu kata. For a 2 kyu kata you will get 10%. For lower ranked ones you will recieve progressively less progress.
Just complete some 1&2 kyu katas and you will be 1kyu in no time :)
I decided the kata for 3 kyu "Calculator" did not receive honor points! (I didn`t unlock this kata, and not any other at all). After 22 hours, I tried again to download the answer, as there were 519 honor points so remain. I tried to go into the discussion of this kata, antivirus throws “the connection to the site www.codewars.com has been safely interrupted because it is infected JS:CVE-2016-3198-A[Expl]”. It https://www.codewars.com/users/agile_tiger/site-events also shows that I decided: blue code challenge completed 10, but I have 11 of them, yellow code challenge completed 3 but I have 5(one kata 6 kyu and four kata 5 kyu) of them. Help return my honestly earned honor points)
Wait for your stats to refresh. If it still persists, open an issue on GitHub. It's not a kata issue (a CW issue if it is an issue).
4kyu kata, and 2 honor in the end. Nice
I have just finished a kata on 4kyu and my honor only updataed in 1 point.. it looks like some other people have similiar problems I worked realy hard completing this one.. any idea?
My honor is not growing even when I solve new katas Am I doining something wrong or don't know something?
I see 42 and 37 completed katas in different places. If you haven't clicked "unlock solutions" or cheated and it isn't updated shortly (in several hours maybe), then you should go to https://github.com/Codewars/codewars.com/issues. Search first, someone most likely has already had something like this.
I have submitted my solution about 3 times, passed all tests
What is strange that it doesn't appear when I press "My solution" in solutions tab of Kata.
For problem "Max product" it worked, for problem "Perfect Square" didn't
You have honor for 48 "Code challenge completed" now, so I think it was just delayed. It probably isn't related to solutions not appearing in "My solutions". Try adding an empty line and resubmitting; if the solution isn't the same as an existing published solution, then sometimes it helps.
I observed, that there is no honor given, when I did the same kata in another language or repeat it with the same language. Maybe you tried it already before?
Solving the same kata with another language doesn't give you additional honor)
Hello. I have some problems with honor. I've completed a lot of my unfinished katas for the last 2 days, but my honor didn't increase in many cases. Katas were with locked solutions. Even after refresh nothing hasn't changed.
On my profile under"Honor", it says I've completed 32 kata, but above that in "Progress", it says I've completed 15 kata. How does that work?
Probably need to wait for the stats refresh
I'm sure they're refreshed several times. (If it's possible to delete replies, I'd like to do so with this one)
I'm sure they've refreshed several times.
The stats just refreshed, and both numbers say 16 katas. Oh I got you, if it's under Honor, that means you earned 32 honor from completing katas. So, this:
does not mean I have completed 1414 katas, it means that I earned 1414 honor from completing katas.
Oh, I see. Thank you for clearing that up!
What do I need to do?
Response received but no data was written to STDOUT or STDERR.
Write in the discussion for that particular kata, maybe posting your code and marking your post as having spoiler content.
I just finished my first Kata and now have 8kyu, but I've only 6 honor? Why is that?
Hi fletcher-greg. The ranking system is a bit different to usual and it follows the system used in martial arts and the game Go.
Everybody starts at 8kyu and when ranking up will become 7kyu, then 6kyu, through to 1kyu. The next rank after that is 1dan, then 2dan, through to 8dan. The highest rank attained on the site so far is 2dan.
Ah okay. My bad, haha. I mistakenly thought it worked in ascending order, lol. All good. Thanks for the info :)
Is there a way to reset the honor?
No, but a moderator could. If you want to start fresh again, you could just create a new account.
I completed three Kata today but my progress towards the next rank only increased once. Is it possible that I tripped some kind of cheat detection? I usually do my code in PyCharm and then paste it into Codewars so I don't think that was the issue. The only thing I can think of is that I solved the Kata in Pycharm before hitting "Train" and immediately pasted it in and attempted it. Does anyone know if timing is a thing? Perhaps I entered the solution too quickly? Any other ideas?
Sometimes it stalls, it has happened before. You can read posts below with similar problems.
Thanks for the reply. I did read about that. In my case, I didn't get points for the first kata, I immediately got points for the second, and I haven't gotten any points yet for the third. Is it possible for the first to stall and not the second? Maybe the score was for the first and second but my rank only increased .7% for a level 6 and 7. Is there somewhere that you can see the actual points towards the next rank you get for each completed kata and not just the rank percentage increase?
You can check this: https://www.codewars.com/users/nitro9a/site-events/ <- Not a lot of info, but better than nothing.
It's weird, because it says you didn't earn a single point for 23 White code challenges completed. About this, I've been said it's always been like that and the 2 points are awarded as "challenge completed".
I didn't get honor but that is different from rank, right? The one that increased my rank today was white and I did that one just to quickly check if my rank was increasing. Thanks for the link. I've never seen that page.
anyone have an explaination as to why my honor shot up about 1,300 points for no reason a couple of days ago?
This has happened before, and the points eventually revert to what they ought to be, but how? why? what?
did you cheat? thats the only thing i can think of
But if that happened several times you'd most likely be banned by now. It may be a bug.
I've had this happen to my honor points before. Once, they dropped down about a thousand points for two days or so. But they went right back to the number they should have been. So I figured it was a glitch, and as far as this case goes
that would cause my points to go up so suddenly. I would be delighted if these extra 1,319 points were to just go away.
https://github.com/Codewars/codewars.com/issues/1715 Quite a few active CW users have several thousands of extra points due to bugs these days. Welcome to the club :D You seem to have had 2 incidents and have 1047 + 1320 extra points.
@Unnamed thanks for confirming this, and the link
How can I join a Clan?
As far as I can tell, Clans are pre-existing groups such as companies or universties or other real world groups. I'm on my own so I changed my Clan to Nomads. Turns out there is a few of us!
I would like to reset my allies. I joined WGU first and then added MIT to see how the other half are doing. After crying myself to sleep, I want to only be alligned with my study buddies at WGU. How can I reset this?
How can i directly contact kazk?
Hello everyone. My actual rank is inflated due to a stupid error on my part. I was looking at a couple of 1 kyu problems and I looked up a solution to understand how someone could solve it. I didn't know that you got honor not when you press submit, but rather when you correctly solve all the test cases. I "solved" all the test cases using someone else's solution and I accidentally got like 200 honor. I went from being 6 kyu with 232 honor to being 4 kyu with 485 honor. Is there a way I can revert this?
The integrity you display in willing to revert your honor makes you deserving of that honor.
If I solve a kata in one language and then solve it in another will I get honor for the second solution in the different language?
Go down a few posts, and read KPH3082's post, he/she did the same question.

I'm new here and just completed 2 katas at the 8kyu level, but my honour points haven't been updated to reflect this. I thought you got 2 points for every kata solved - can someone tell me if I've go that wrong?
In this age of instant gratification and feedback, the server might be a bit slow to update your two points. But what's more rewarding than the fact that you actually learned to solve a kata and got it solved, no? A man's worth is measured by his achievement not wealth.
what does it mean? honor percentile: Top 0,06%
yesterday that show me 99%
Our honor compared to the other CW users is shown in a different way now. If I'm not mistaking

percentile.Hello ,somehow i submitted my solution two times in this kata , can someone help and decrease my points? https://www.codewars.com/kata/5552101f47fc5178b1000050
known bug. See: https://github.com/Codewars/codewars.com/issues/1592
Apart from posting there to signal the trouble and ask to kazk to remove the points, you cannot do anything to it (but does it be worth of the trouble, for only 8 pts? ;) )
is this a bad habit that if i can't solve a kata for 1 or 2 days than i unclock the solution and practice and learn from it afterwards?
The way I see it is that as long as you learn from doing so, then that's all that really matters. I've done it myself once but made sure I fully understood it, made notes and reflected on it before I moved on.
Rote learning is always dangerous because it often leads to "going through the motion" scenario. You see but do not perceive. If you do not have photographic memory, I suggest that you repeat the exercises few weeks later after your memory of the respective solutions fade away.
thanks buddy
Does my honor only go up when I train on a new Kata, even if I solve it again in another language? For example, I solved a Kata in Python and my honor went up. I then went and swtiched it to Javascript and solve the same Kata but my honor did not increase.
Your HPs go up only once per kata, you can lvl up in different languages doing the same kata, but the HPs remain the same.
Thank you for your response!
When the original katas are ranked does that rank carry over for other languages or are they reranked for each language?
I'm sure there are things that are more easily done in certain languages over others.
One rank applies to all languages. In certain cases it may be unfair, but it's just another reason to learn some more languages :)
I plan on it.
I guess that makes sense to an extent. I'm in C so things done more easily in higher language's "lower level" kata, may be more challenging in C. The higher language's "higher level" kata would still most likely be harder in C compared to the higher language's "lower level" kata.
Thanks for the info. I appreciate it.
How do you change your profile pic?
Link your CW account to a Github account, change it from there.

Hi
VIVA EL PAN
wow
How can you have 0 Honor points after solving 1,002 katas: https://www.codewars.com/users/Hacker%20Sakana/stats ?
For cheating.
oops!
He solved the hackcodewars kata
My points have decreased by 250 points on its own. Please help
Good morning, I am new here and I would like to contribute to the community by translating. How can I do? I can speak fluently in French. Thanks for answering me.
I'm not sure but I believe that the translations for katas are about programming languages. For example C++ to Java.
okay, thank you.
How do I start a new clan? Is it just as simple as filling in a new clan name?
Yes.
hey coders!
heres my question..
suppose you solved a kata in "python", and you get your deserved points . now if you do solve that same kata in "JavaScript" will you get once points?
My question is can you get points for a single kata multiple times by solving it in different languages?
thank you for your support, Happy Coding! Cheers! :)
No. But rank increases in all languages separately.
ok understood! thank you Sir for your time! do appreciate it.
i think you will get point for that too.
Sometimes it gives lower point and sometimes you get higher point
My name isnt appearing in my clan's ranking. This is truly frustrating. Please fix this.
I have the same problem
Does number of lines of code matter? I completed a 4 kyu kata and didn't get that many points for it. I was wondering if it was because my solutions was rather lengthy. I am wondering if the amount of points you get is higher with fewer lines of code...
nope, that doesn't matter. Blue kata give 32 honor points. If you didn't get them at this time, they will show up later, don't worry. Sometimes, the servers chock a bit on that. Generally, doing another kata makes the things right. If still not good, just wait longer, that's all.
cool, thanks.
Nope
good to know, thanks
I completed a blue kata but I got just 8 points, as it was yellow. What's going on?
Your bad
Today I completed a 3kyu "Calculator" kata but I only recieved 2 points for completing and 1 point for the survey, my experience points to get to the next rank (4 kyu) didn't even budge after completing. Still stayed at 8%.
Probably just bad at coding
Yesterday I completed 2kyu kata but there is no change in my honor points. The solution was accepted, and it is listed on my profile at "solutions". Why? It is a server problem?
I would guess your just terrible at coding
Why does it say I have 34 kata and 84 honor from doing my first Kata? Is this normal? I'm also kinda pissed because it randomly submitted the kata before I was ready :(
Might as well make a new account and resubmit
8 kyu kata - 2 honor ("Multiply", technically the first kata). 3 kyu kata - 32 hoor. Reaching 7 kyu - 20 honor. Reaching 6 kyu - 30 honor.
Nevermind. I misread the stats.
Please don't swear, my mum looks at my computer.
Hello, I have a doubt about how is the way to reach "1 dan" rank since the highest katas have a difficulty of "1 kyu" and today there is not yet published any kay with "1 dan" of difficulty ... Is there some condition that enable the "1 Dan" rank? thanks! pablo
Solving enough katas (mostly high ranked ones) you'll eventually reach 1 dan.
No clue what you wrote, I didn't read it
Honor does not changing for 2-3 days, but i had completed some katas for this days. What it mean?? When bug will be fixed?
Have you read the post below yours? Between yesterday and today my honor points were updated once, the CW servers have some kind of problem it seems, only jhoffner knows when it'll be fixed.
It's not a bug, your just bad at coding
Yesterday, I did a lot of kata ranging from 2kyu to 7kyu. My rank increased from 3kyu to 2kyu but my honor wasn't changing at all. It still did not change today. Is this a server problem because I know I should have gotten at least some honor for the kata I was doing?
Yes, it is a server problem. Also your own solutions doesn't show in Solutions tab of a kata after you've succesfully submited them (but you can still see them in your profile, at least I noticed that too). I think it'll be solved eventually.
Thanks for the response. Yeah, everything is still normal. Solutions show when I submit a kata correctly, rank progress updates, it's just the honor.
Many people had such problems yesterday (and it seems to be happening now as well). It's most probably a problem with their servers. They should fix it in a couple of days, at least I think so.
Try harder to write the code. Simple
Yesterday I completed lvl 2 kata (after couple attempts) gaining 228 honor and today another lvl 2 kata (after many attempts) gaining 32 honor. Does your honor gain depend on the amount of attempts you make or what?
No, but the update of the count isn't always instananeous. You'll get the points later (sometimes, doing another kata, of any level, produces the update).
Sometimes it calculates the lower points given and add it to the current points which gives you higher point when you solve some katas
Hello!
I solved in the last 1 hour 2 kata, but my honor remained the same (1890) after the submit? The solution was accepted, and it is listed on my profile at "solutions". Why? It is a server problem?
Thanks
Also, no change in rankings.
Same here, no honor added after solving kata
the counting is sometimes a bit differed, that's all. You'll get your point a bit later. Sometimes, solving another kata is enough to force the update.
Thanks, I got my points after 3-4 hours after solving it, I was used with the fact that the points are refreshing instantly after solving the kata.
Clearly the site doesn't want to give you honor. Quit.
Hey guys, been polishing on my python recently (got to 4th kyu), but I want to practice my java (which is really bad atm). Is there a way to get codewars to suggest easier java challenges but harder python challenges? Currently it treats it as if I'm equally good at both...
Literally the same issue with JavaScript 4kyu Java and horrible JS... try going to the Kata section and selecting 8/7kyu Java challenges. They're generally good to introduce you.
Nope. Just do a "hand made" search by rank in the page of the available katas
Recently I looked for my leaderboard position. The number doesn't give user useful info. I'd suggest to add some percentage of top in addition. Also it would be good to have this percentage within language. With this feauture user would better understand how good is he amongst other users.
Your not on the leaderboard because your terrible
Would it be difficult to get a concrete number of honour listed near that neat circle progress chart that explains exactly how much more honour we need to rank up? I'm in no hurry, since I'm quite the beginner still, but it is really encouraging my coding, to see how close I am to ranking up.
You can read this and this.
Ah, yes, I read those, I believe. I wasn't curious so much as how the ranking system works, but how much honour you need per rank. The first article you linked to me tells me the ranking system rank names and descending/ascending order, but the table below that seems to explain how much honour you /get/ from reaching a certain level rather than the honour /needed/ to get to a certain level. That is what I was after? Since the profile pages just say "11%" to the next rank. I know it's simple math. I was just curious if it would be hard to have as a hover feat. or something.
Unless those pages you've linked do say the required honour? In which case, my bad, and I will guess I just keep missing it on each read..
The reason you can’t get a straight answer is that your question is flawed. You don’t rank up based on honor they are correlated because you rank up based on the number and difficulty of the kata you complete which also gives you honor. I good hypothetical example is you won’t rank up even if you get a million honor by having a comment up voted a million times. Now I don’t know what the algorithm is but just look at https://www.codewars.com/docs/ranking-and-honor-1
Hello. Why I have 0pt for White code challenge completed and White code snippet translation approved since my count > 0? https://www.codewars.com/users/lszcs/site-events Thanks.
Virus! DONT CLICK THE LINK
How do I see my self in my clan's ranking I used to see my self there and now I don't, I'm just not in the list.
Have you had any response about this? or did you find out on your own?
Curious about this too. Kinda takes the fun out of it.
I did not find out and I've had no responses.
My honor went from over 1000 to 766 after completing a Kata. I'm not sure how that happened - was there a change in the calculations while I was solving?
Looks like your "yellow challenge completed" part got pooped up:
https://www.codewars.com/users/BrinstarBeast/site-events
Maybe try completing some yellow katas to refresh it.
That seemed to work, thank you!
How does one start a new clan?
You just think of a name and write it as your clan :)
How to change default avatar?
Only way I was able to change the avatar was by connecting my GitHu account to my CW account.
If you notice you're not getting the honour points you should, you can check your points breakdown at the url:
https://www.codewars.com/users/USERNAME/site-events
If there's a discrepancy add to this github issue:
https://github.com/Codewars/codewars.com/issues/943
Its very frustrating not getting the points for your hard work.
At the moment the admins aren't paying attention so please add your voice to get this fixed!
Thanks
I posted mine on the git wiki. I also noticed that my incorrect honor score is what's showing on my stats Honor Breakdown. It looks like while my site-events page is not showing honor for my white challenges, the Honor Breakdown is, but its not showing honor for other stuff like referrals and up-votes.
can someone explain me how ranking system actually works? right now in 'completed kata' tab i see that guy in 500th place has 2978 honor, but if you open his profile you'll see there completely different stats, like 3400 honor instead of 2978 and leaderboard position #623 instead of 500 how can i figure out when i'll reach top500 in 'completed katas' list?
You can see "Honor Breakdown" -> "Completed Kata" honor in your own profile.
Might be a good idea to award a portion of honor points for submitting a translation even before it's approved (as with a new kata before it comes out of beta). Translating kata into other languages (especially those languages that are new to codewars) seems to be an excellent contribution to the community, and writing one with a complete test suite takes some time.
It's already the case, actually, but the translator gets the points only when the kata is approved.
Which? The original kata? or the translation?
I've done 7 translations into R.
I did one of my own kata (originally in python), which was (and remains) in beta. I got honor points for that one as soon as I approved it (as the author of the original kata).
The other 6 haven't been approved. Some are of katas in beta. Some are of katas that are not in beta. None of them resulted in honor points.
I'm saying a new translation should result in some points as soon as it's submitted, and then more points once the translation is approved. The total number of points would be the same, just give a bit of a positive reinforcement right after the work was completed. Just like with writing an original kata.
It's possible it's just taking things a while to update, but when I submit a new original kata I see my honor go up immediately. When I submit a translation for review, I don't.
The kata itself.
I found it pretty consistent to not get points before the transaltion is approved, actually. That avoids people doing bad work just to get some points. Especially now that moderators can approve translation on kata whose author is inactive on CW. The problem on your isde, might be that there aren't a lot of R users to approve the translation? I don't know.
My suggestion is that we do the same thing for translations as we do for original kata. You can submit a bad original kata and it will either become a good kata through the beta process or never get out of beta. You still get some points for submitting your bad original kata. Then you get full points once it comes out of beta.
If someone submitted a bad translation because they're learning or misunderstood something, or didn't know how to write random tests, the translation review process will help them fix their translation or learn to write random tests. Just like the beta process does for original kata.
In the case of the malicious person who is trying to submit bad work on purpose, it's easier to do that with bad original kata than bad translations.
Noticed again a glitch with the honor system; got only 2 points for solving a Yellow Kata, and afterwards, only 2 points for solving a Blue Kata. Will submit a bug report.
IDK it's a glitch or not. But you need to add a reaction to get the proper honor.
Is this still accurate: https://airtable.com/embed/shrDt7USqZ7GStRb0/tbly10FthXIRqbd7L/viwJf0lpHrvPCKNfb ?
I've completed multiple 5/6 kyu katas and only got 2 points for them but the chart say I should be getting 8. I am at 5kyu atm. This is one I just completed that only gave me 2 points: https://www.codewars.com/kata/586dd26a69b6fd46dd0000c0/discuss
IDK it's a glitch or not. But you need to add a reaction to get the proper honor.
As a matter of observation, I am new to the site and decided to jump right in and do all 1k katas for Java and even after completing all of them, my ranking in Java is just 3k. It seems odd that I can solve literally every problem in class and still be ranked two levels below the given class.
Isn't that just a function of how many 1 kyu Java kata there are? You get what, 128 points for a 1 and 2 kyu? The site isn't going to check what percentage of 1kyu kata you've completed.. if you want to get to 1kyu in JS, do 2s, 3s and 4s.
How do I change from one clan to another?
Thanks. I knew it was something simple. :)
What happened with the honor points? Were the points per kyu level changed?
I used to have much less points if I recall correctly, and someone in my group was neck & neck with me, now my points are in the 800's and 2x theirs. I think we used to be in the 100's. What's up with this change? It seems to be rampant looking through the posts in here, and there's nothing communicated on the blog since about a year ago.
yes it all changed and your points were updated according to the new "rules". But this calculation only happens when you connect yourself after the change. So your friend's scores are still the old one if they did not come back here.
So... galvanize recommends for students to do the level 7 codewars. Does anyone know what this means? Are they saying to move up through 7kyu.
No, I believe they just mean to do a bunch of 7kyu questions to prepare for their interviews. If you level down that's great. Try to do about 15-20 7kyu.
@jhoffner
, can you please check my honor points, since yesterday after completing a beta kata some points are counted twice ("Code challenge rank assessed 1714" x 2, so 1714 extra points:-)). First i thought a new change of your counting system, than i thought a late birthday present (if so many thanks;-)!)... but now it seems to me it could be a little bug;-)...Thanks - seems to be fixed now;-)!
I don't quite understand how the kyu ranking is calculated.
I've completed a 3 kyu yet my kyu ranking is 5.
Do I need to keep doing challenges to up my honor points in order to rank up? It would seem this would just cause needless grinding of easier challenges in order to level up to what it should show.
Shouldn't it reflect your highest challenge complete?
If it reflected the highest challenge completed, then it would provide incentive to users who may feel the need to 'lookup' solutions for harder kata.
The way that it is implemented now doesn't necessarily require grinding. If you complete several high-kyu kata, you can definitely improve your ranking faster than, say, completing forty or fifty low-kyu kata.
The way I understand it, the system is setup where the amount of honor to get your next rank is the equivalent of solving 10 katas of one rank higher than your current rank.
I do C#. In C# there are a total of 3 challenges that are 1 kyu, 5 challenges that are 2 kyu and 7 challenges that are 3 kyu. That means there's no real way to advance in C# without grinding the easy ones.
The incentive to lookup solutions is already there if that's all you care about. However it doesn't make the system any more or less indicative of your skill level by making you grind lesser challenges.
Let's just call a spade a spade. The honor system isn't designed to show your skill level, it's there to make the site more successful by encouraging people to create more challenges, vote on katas and join in on community conversation and that's all.
Can we be awarded at least 1 honor point for solving the same kata in a different language?
yes that would be nice
Hello all, what is maximum user level? Previously i am assuming it is 1 kyu but i founded user with 1 dan level in leaderboard list. His results are awesome it is real human or something like test bot? https://www.codewars.com/users/kazk
Another similar experience with JavaScript; trained it up to 7 Kyu, solved a 2 Kyu Kata, and only got 2 honor points?? After that JavaScript ranked up to 5 Kyu (but that had no effect on honor). It seems weird that solving a 2 Kyu Kata, which takes several hours to complete, only gives 2 honor points... I noticed that just after solving, I needed to login again; maybe the points were not (correctly?) awarded because of the login??
This happens to me a lot. Seems like if you use the "back" button on your browser right after logging in, you get logged out. I always check my ranking after solving kata to make sure no funny business is going on.
Hmm, I just trained C# up to 4Kyu, did a 2Kyu C# Kata, and only got 2 honor points?? Is that right?
Hey. I have solved only about 100 katas but in my page it shows I have completed around 608. Any suggestions on why it might be that?
The 608 is the total amount of honor these 100 katas correspond to. Each kata awards x honor, sum all these up and you get your 608.
I completed a 4kyu but it looks like that only gave me 1 honor point. Why could that be? Any ideas?
My honor point total in the top right of the screen (305) doesn't seem to correctly reflect my total here https://www.codewars.com/users/rscharfer/site-events (311). Last night I completed a yellow kata (6 pnts) and maybe that is still processing..
Now it is correct. Your points are never lost. Sometimes the update of the visualisation is done when you get new points or something changed.
Hi,
https://.../site-events
matters, don't care about the rest(!) :)Regards,
suic
hello, I know I shouldn't care about the rest, but I am going to ask one more question ; )
For a second time in the last few weeks, solving a kata did not trigger an update to my point total in the top right corner of the screen (even after a few days), nor did it trigger an update to my ranking. However, at https://.../site-events, everything was as it should.
Is this a problem I should report or does it eventually take care of itself? I'm asking because the two scores (top right corner of the screen/ranking and what is seen at 'site-events') haven't been in sync for three days now.
Thanks for any help!
Hi, my suggestion: Wait until those numbers become synchronized. You really don't need to care about those numbers. :) Regards, suic
Hey dudes. How ya doin?
Pretty good man! How about you?
Ryan what is this?
I got the old reward for passing my last blue kata. (2 instead of 32)
Hello, my honor recently jumped from 90-something to over 200? Was there another issue with the site?
If you saw the announcement yesterday, they redid how much honor doing katas gives, sometimes by a very large amount in the case of the high ranked katas: https://medium.com/@Codewars/honor-and-leaderboard-updates-a1491f2cb2e2 . The changes are retroactive but the system seems to still be doing those updates as we speak.
My apologies I did not see this post. Thank you for clarifying.
Is there a way to see the whole rankings? Top Ten, for example?
https://www.codewars.com/users/leaderboard
how do i comment to get more honour
You get 1 honour for each upvote you get on a comment. Posting a comment alone does not get you honour. For example, I upvoted your comment so you should get 1 honour for that.
I'm currently 2kyu, and there are no more 2kyu or 1kyu Python problems left to solve for me. If I try a 3kyu problem, I earn 1 point, if a try a 8kyu problem, I also earn 1 point! This goes against the gist of ranking; harder problems should earn you more points. Please fix.
It is not one point for a 3kyu. Sometimes the system does that, but solve a few more katas and the score will get adjusted.
I tried 5 problems of 3 kyu (with one 2kyu problem in between); they all gave me 1 point if I remember correctly. Does that count as a few more? Still it seems the effort for a 8 kyu problem (about one minute) compared to a 3kyu problem (easily one hour) does not translate in a comparable difference in points earned.
Can someone explain to me why I get 1 point for the solution fo a 5kyu which equals solving a 8kyu but 2 points for a 7kyu and 3 for a 6kyu?
My honor dropped from over 1000 to 365 a few days ago, when it will be fixed?
? what happend to my honors
I know they were some issues with the ranking system and now it has been fixed. However, my ranking is below that what is was before, I lost about 30 places in the leatherboard. Is the roll back complete?
I lost about 200 ranks originally, but by today it is only 100 ranks less than before the honor issue. I think everyone's ranks are still being corrected as more people lose their incorrect honor.
Hi, my honor has dropped from around 135 (can't rememeber the exact number) to 68. This happened after the site seemed to hang when submitting a solution, so I shutdown the browser and reloaded the page.
Please see all of the other comments below. This was a temporary site issue, your honor shouldn't have been that high to begin with (honor changes got deployed prematurally).
So why is the honor system so opaque? How do you know my honor should not have been that high? Where and how do you find this out? And can I access that data somehow?
Check here.
My honor went from 780 to 1430, but know it is back to 780 and all is good. However, I got an "ability" from 1000 and 1300 honor milestones. This should be revoked right?
Had like 800 honor yesterday, now i have like 600.
There was an issue that was fixed.
Two hours ago in my profile there was info that I've passed something like 180+ katas, but now it is only 74. Also there is huge honor decrease. Something 'is' or 'was' wrong.
There was an issue that was fixed. As far as the 180+ kata, you are looking at the honor bar for kata, not the # of completed kata bar (there is no # of kata completed bar).
(completed kata, honor, achievements) were (180+,200+,50+), for now they are still (76,112.35). data from https://www.codewars.com/users/%username%.
It seems like some of the katas completed in September/October are missed.
hey guys I just had 200 honor points resolved simplest kata 8 kyu and now I'm on 584? I think sth is wrong?
.
should be fixed now
Hey guys. I just did a problem which awarded me over 500 honor!! It doesn't make sense. It was only a level 6 kyu!!
Can this be fixed?
.
Should be fixed now
I have found myself with a big jump in honour score, I don't know what affected it.
Is it when you reach 25 Blue code challenge completed? I've already checked site-events, but it would be useful to have a log about all scores' changes.
Looks like the points of "complete kata" is changed
Is it by kata color? I see yellow is x6, and blue kata is x30. Or maybe is the upvote on authored katas changing.
Yes, it is yellow x6 and bluex30. Upvote not changed. Wow, I am now in the top 100, those 1000 completed katas paid off.
Changes to the honor point system got prematurally deployed, which has been rolled back. Your honor should go back to its original point system soon.
There are a number of new changes being planned, most of them centered around updating the system to more appropriately reward users who author/complete harder kata - for the purpose of promoting the creation (and beta testing) of harder kata on the site.
Dear Jake, We don't need roll back the honor :D:D:D
hopefully blue katas will still remain x30...
Haha. Yeah the honor updates are still coming, but there are a few things that need to be completed first, as well as a blog post so that everyone doesn't freak out and wonder what is going on.
I was like wowzers, a 500 point 7kyu!
Hi, I'm at level 5 kyu and recently did 3 challenges of 3 kyu. One of them increased my honor by 8 points, one by 3 and the last one helped me gain just a single point. Can someone explain why this happens? We are supposed to get more points if we solve more difficult problems, right? The slow increase is demotivating.
How come there are not any masters yet ?
Is there something wrong with the honor points? I solved a 5kyu problem yesterday and got 2 point, it took me couple of hours. Today a solved an 8kyu in about 10 seconds and got 1 point. This can't be right?
Newbie here. I am 7 kyu and with 36 honor points. I just solved 3 7-kyu level problems successfully and submitted my solutions - however my honor points are not increasing. They used to previously.
Am I missing something or after some time do honor points only increase if you solve problems of a higher level.
They were refreshing the stats yesterday at that time. You should have the points now.
I want to earn extra honor by submitting alternative fully different solutions for kata.
I agree with this 100%
yup but since you can see other's solutions.................
Yeah the solution has to be compared to every other solution to see if its similar and then grouped.
Suggestion: The minimum required honor for publishing a Kata should be significantly increased. (e.g. to 200 points or something?)
--
In NO way am I wanting to discourage any budding authors!
But I just think the training wheels should be left on the bike a little longer than they currently are.
By experiencing doing more Kata before jumping in to write their first one, the author would then be much more familiar with CW best-practices like:
IMO the status-quo is slowing causing CW to be polluted with junk, such as:
Too many duplicated Kata. Maybe there are already enough Katas for: phone number regex, palindromes, Roman numerals, Fibonacci, LCD, and so-on....
Too many of the same issues over and over in the discourse: "Needs random tests", "Poor description", This Kata is same as that Kata", ...
A Growing number of poor Kata that may remain in Beta forever because they'll never achieve enough upvotes.
~~
I understand that writing first Kata is very exciting! Been there, done that. So I want to re-emphasise, I'm not attempting to discourage anybody.
But this may be a simple way to achieve/maintain higher quality Katas, and result in some more imaginative Kata ideas instead of re-hashing same'ol same'ol which just dilutes the good stuff.
My 2c. Thanks for reading.
Cheers, DM
Kata publishing gives only 3 points.... That is not the reason for publishing a kata....
I think, newbies do not know about that! For most of them it is interesting to create a kata on their own.
I would agree dinglemouse, that it would be better to allow to create katas only from a higher amount of points.
Yes, you are right... haven't seen "...required honor..." - my mistake;-)
would be nice to have like a pop up at the end of a kata saying how much honor you have gained
Just yesterday, I had 3878 honor, but today it has gone down all the way to 3002!
On the leaderboard, however, my position is still the same and the honor number is still 3878. (Not anymore. SEE UPDATE).
When I went to site-events just now, I noticed that the whole row that contains translation honor has disappeared. Does this mean that every translation I have made has gone to waste?
UPDATE: My ranking on the leaderboard has dropped 30 places.
Have you had any cheaty solutions (that is, generic cheats that allow to bypass any tests)?
If you mean hijacking
Math.random()
orTest.expect(true); process.exit whatever
, no, nothing like that. And under site-events, there are no negative items. It's just that the whole translations row is gone, meaning I have around 800-900 less honor than I'm supposed to!Have you created an issue on github for this problem? (bkaes lost over 3000 honor points I think. noLan appr. 500)
No, not yet. I will translate one of your katas, and then see if it refreshes.
I think you will get back your points:

I just did :)
Seems to be fixed
How different language kyu determines ones overall kyu?
Could someone please explain what the 'percentile' number stands for on our profiles?
40% means that you are in the top 40% of users in terms of ranking
"top" 40% is misleading. It just means you are in the 40th percentile, which is based off of your honor compared to others. The top users are in the 90%+ percentile.
@jhoffner I'm glad I found that answer I was very confused by it :P
I recently completed a few kata, increasing my honor to 1223, but I came back later and saw it was down to 1221...
So, is there a way to lose honor? Why does this happen?
Thanks for the help! :D
If you have any beta katas, you can lose honour if an issue is lodged against it. You can also lose honour if people downvote a comment you have made anywhere.
Thank you, I understand now!
I am 2 Kyu right now, and I have just one 1Kyu problem left, no 2 Kyu problem left and a lot below these two levels. I do not know how to progress in my kata rank. I just solved a beta indexed in 2kyu and it did not give me any progress. Is there anyway to progress at all? For example, can I create a difficult 1 or 2 dan problem and solve it to increase my rank?
I am a 2kyu and I am still progressing by solving 8-7-6-5 kyu katas, so I am not sure why you say you cannot progress. However, it take a very long time to progress when you solve "easy" kata when you are have a 2kyu rank. Beta katas does not help you to progress, you only increase your total point ranking by solving beta katas, it will not help you to 'progress' toward 1 kyu.
You can still progress from beta kata, but you only receive the progress once they are approved (and their rank is set). You can create harder kata which once approved will also contribute to your rank progress.
I thought that lower katas will not give progress. I guess I was mistaken. I will get right back to it. It is nice to hear that those betas will give me something afterall. Thanks snormandeau and jhoffner for feedback.
Every day honor goes up a few blips because some kind user out there has up-voted something I did (?) or completed an authored Kata (?) or ... what else... (?). It's mostly just a big mystery.
I know about the https://www.codewars.com/users/[me]/site-events page. That's kind of interesting but it really doesn't indicate what's changing.
So is there any way to know where those extra points come from? Which Katas are actively being solved? Which solution is getting upvoted?
The points are nice but imo it'd be more useful just to know what exactly it was that others thought was worth up-voting.
The last kata I did lowered my level from 7kyu to 6kyu, and also in my profile says my next rank is gonna be 5kyu. My honor did improved on the other hand. What's going on?
6kyu is better than 7kyu.
It goes from 8kyu to 1kyu and then up from 1dan to 8dan.
So, don't fear! :-) All right!
haha, I forgot how it works! ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Yeah the idea of the kyu system is that its "number of degrees away from master".
Several people are asking if we get points for solving the same kata in another language. The answer is no. Yet, the whole idea of this site is to motivate people to practice and learn. For example, I only know one language (Python) and I have solved about 750 katas. I am thinking to try Ruby, but the motivation is not too great to practice here because there are not that many katas that exist in Ruby but not in Python. PROPOSAL: to get some points if we solve a kata in another language. 1/10 of the original value? .1 for a white kata, .2 for a yellow? Any other suggestion?
Make your solutions good enough and eventually you'll get points for "Best Practices" or "Clever".
Do you get points for ranking up in a language though ?
How to rank up to 1 dan?
I think that is not possible (yet) ...
I saw two players with 1 dan ranking
You can now :-) @smile67, @kazk and @gabbek are already there :-)
Hello! I finished several kata, but honnor was not increase. why did this happen? could me help?=) https://www.codewars.com/users/FilippovAM/site-events show me 293 honnor?
At the moment, it seems there is a problem at CodeWars. But as you see in site-events, your honor-points are not lost. :-) I suppose, Jake will fix it soon.
Thanks!! =) Codewars, best of the best)
Hello guys, I have a question: I had already solved a kata in one language, and then again recently in a different language. Should i expect to get more honor, or not? I am pretty sure I've gotten honor when this happened before, but I noticed it didn't happen this time.
Thanks :)
No, you just get honor once.
Ok, Thanks :)
I finished a kata ,submit my solution, and it said "You have passed all tests!".But I didn't get any honor, and I can't see other solutions etheir. Why?It makes me annoyed!
Did you submit your final solution?
same problem, and yes i did
I am getting the same issue, I've completed at least 2 4kyu problems that should have given me honor, but nothing...
Same problem persists here as well. But who gives a heck about those points || honors! All i need is knowledge :p
I sometimes get that, and then I reload the page, repaste my code into it, submit again, and then it works.
Hi, I finished a 3 kyu Kata a few days ago. My honor only went up by 1(I think). I know it can sometimes take a bit of time for honor to show, just not sure how long. Anyone know when I should become concerned? Thanks.
Do not be concerned, it will readjust itself as you do more katas. I do not why this happens, but in the end, it always fix itself.
@snormandeau Thanks, like you said, I finished another Kata and it updated correctly. All is right with the world. Cheers.
snormandeau mentioned earlier, you can check out source of honor points for youself or other users. This may answer lots of confusions.

Cool, either I've never seen it before or I've already forgotten. Now I want to find which solutions are most upvoted. Is there a way to find a solution by its ID?
I also have the same question. IDs used be part of url addresses for that kata; but not anymore.
Both slugs and IDS work for kata urls.
I tried lots of IDs to load their pages without success, like this: 'https://www.codewars.com/kata/57531a3a0c2e9df19a000006' The ID is 57531a3a0c2e9df19a000006. Am I doing it wrong?
Must not be the right ID then. It might be that the site events page is giving you the wrong ID. I can't even load mine right now to test. Honestly that page wasn't meant to be used by anyone, its for debugging purposes. It creates a lot of stress on the servers, to the point that I may need to disable it. A proper page needs to be created in its place.
I found this online by pure chance. Why can't we have a button close to the honor breakdown page where people could see their own event page?
It would be nice to offer a link to the site-events-site from the profile-site!
The site-events-site is very informative! I searched for this... Thanx Aryan-firouzian!
Yeah absolutely. Its not that we can't have a button, its just that the page was not meant as a public link and is not optimized nor a very good UX experience. The real fix here is to add functionality to the site that is meant to show your points - I just have a large queue of work and this hasn't made it to the very top yet.
Who can clarify "percentile" meaning in Honor Position:#29602 / 58% ? Should I read it as:"equal or above 58% of Codewars users" ?
Yes
Now that we can see the top 500 in the leaders, to promote competition, could we see the change of rank maybe once a month? Something like: Name Rank Previous Rank Change Bill ...1........ 1 ......- Kathy ..2 ........3 ......+1 Bruno ..3 ........2 ......-1 Would be fun.
Why arent solutions avaible for browsing outside kye range with master problems not within filter
Perhaps someone can tell me: How is it possible to have for example more than 2000 or 3000 honor points without publishing katas, no conversations, no translations and perhaps less than 200 solved katas??? It's far away from my "calculation", so i really have no idea...

You can see the split of the points (if you are not aware of it) by going to:
https://www.codewars.com/users/USERNAME/site-events
username = enter your own or someone else
This will show you were all the points came from. You can see any user split by using this.

A lot of those cases exist because some people get an insane of up votes on very few katas. 650 points for one kata, 450 for another. I suggested to have a max of 50 upvotes points per katas. If not, the ranking is insane for some users and does not reflect the amount of work they put in to earn their rank.
I have been honing my basic skills to become more proficient at doing the basics right, and so have done a tone of 8kyu and 7kyu katas, with two or perhaps 3 6kyu katas. However, currently I am ranked a 5kyu.
Most people don't complain about getting something they didn't deserve, but I believe my case shouldn't be allowed. Perhaps reaching a higher kyu should require you to complete a certain number of katas in that kyu, or a higher one so it isn't all just points based? Maybe it does work like this, but I am pretty sure I shouldn't be a 5kyu.
I see your point but I do not agree with it. I am a 3 kyu and I have not solve a single 3 or 4 kyu but I solved or 500 katas. Solving a lot of katas means you can understand a lot of concepts. I solved about 100 6kyu katas, yet I am not able to solve over 100 7kyu because I am not good enough in some concepts (like classes and linked list) in python. So, I think solving a great amount of katas is as valuable as solving a few "harder" katas.
Solving a few hard katas does not make you better coders than solving a lot of katas in lower level. Solving a lot of katas shows that your knowledge is broad. Here a challenge! You are a 5kyu, can you solve all 8kyu katas?
I feel the points awarded for "ranking up" does not represent the effort, as gettting to the the lower kyu take more and more time.
Now it is:
7kyu: 15 6kyu: 20 5kyu: 25 4kyu: 30 3kyu: 50 2kyu: 75 1kyu: 100
How about:
7kyu: 15 6kyu: 25 5kyu: 40 4kyu: 60 3kyu: 85 2kyu: 115 1kyu: 150
It's for all the same, or not?! So where's the problem;-)?
There are several ways to earns points. This suggestion just give more points to those who rank up their levels. Right now in the "top 10" there are only 3 "1kyu".
leader board is sorted by "honor", instead of "rank" ;-)
Generally i think the honor and ranking system here is really complex but balanced and fair. The mix of points for completed katas, reached level and other activities works really good - it's my personal opinion after eight month here on codewars. For me it's no problem for example if the leaderboard is a mix of different kyu levels - it's not all to give (only) good and many code/solutions, sometimes is important to discuss or help others too, so why not getting points and honor on this way too;-). Once again for me it's the right mix and everyone has same chances... I read your suggestions to expand the leaderboard up to top 500 or top 1000 too... But where's the limit, next one reached level 1499 so perhaps he wants to change the limit up to 1500;-)? Generally difficult too, but we all have the same possibilities here;-). So i really don't know what the best is and which new disadvantages will appear changing these things (is it possible to change it on a fair way for all the older solutions, levels, users a.s.o)...? By the way it's a little bit strange for me to be listed inside this top 100 board for example if someone has completed 150 katas, no publications, no conversations, nothing more - there are some of such users listed;-)??
What happens on the leaderboard? Since yesterday the points are changing up and down (not for me, but for others, sometimes 200-400 points down, next time 200 up again a.s.o.). At the moment place 100 starts with 1965 points, some days ago more than 2000 (2045 or so)? So what's happening, is there any explanation? It's not really important, but very strange?!
I have the same problem, it is related to the changes Codewars are making to their website. I used to be about rank 580, went down to 215 and now "stuck" at 335 or so. Hope this is fixed soon!
Yes... seems to me that the "synchronization" of different site parts doesn't work correct and the system changes between old and new states (perhaps one reason for the low speed too). I always get timeouts or messages like "...try later..." on completely white screens and often i have to sign in again (yesterday i lost parts of submitted code). So not really good working since some days;-)... But ok... more time for other things:-). We will see what happens...
I just solved 4kyu Base Conversion challenge and I didn't get any honors and my rank progress is still the same. Did I miss something? :)
