But I would expect anybody working as quantitative analyst or as a data scientist to devise an efficient solution for this problem.

Moreover, this is similar to interview questions you'd expect to see at an interview at Google, Amazon, or Facebook, simply because all of these companies expect candidates to have a strong understanding of algorithms.

This one is great, but more about mathematics than coding ;)
