I'd argue that this is not a best practice as it converts types unnecessarily. Yes, this is easy to solve as a String, but with maths, it can be done more efficiently with rem and div. I'd go as far as to say that the conversion to a string and back to an integer is a code smell. I'm guilty of the code above, so I did a rewrite.
