After you have added a few kata to a collection you and others can train on the kata contained within the collection.

It IS clever, for sure. At least more clever than the way the tests are designed and it emphasizes that point! It's up to the sensei to update his kata so that this becomes invalid (unfortunately, already too much completions, so the test cases are locked).
But effectively, this is absolutely not best practice.
I'm very sad to see people upvoted this as best practices and clever, is that the kind of thing you want to see on this site ?
(Finding it funny is one thing, voting it best practice is another)
