I think it's clever so I vote clever :D
Since I don't really have a proper reference for what 'best practice' would look like.
Clever means for me that it is an approach I couldn't even conceive of,
or that combines aspects of programming in a way that is new to me.

Everything in Python is an object hence creating more objects than you need is slower.

However accessing an item by index in a list is slower than accessing the item directly. So if you need to access the item many times...

Maybe it would be interesting to find out the actual answer to this question with timeit.

In that case, it should be voted best practice IMO. I came up with the same solution too.
