I scribbled over four notebook pages and still couldnt figure it out :(

First time I had to throw in the towel and look at the answers but of course couldnt make any sense out of them because the logic behind this kata still evades me :(
Could anybody tell me the concepts I should be familiar with in order to solve this kata? I would really appreciate it.
