As an old Kata (I created it 10 months ago, it was my first Kata), I have almost forgotten the meaning of a pair of braces...
Only direct opposites may merge, e.g.
[North, South] => []. If there's something in between, they may not merge:[North, West, South]. And yes, this has been a common source for confusion in this kata.
