My understanding of the description (at least for Clojure) is that the argument actually should've been called
zygote
...Difficulty can vary between languages. Most languages do not require lots of boilerplate, so your argument would not apply to them.

Input mutation is never tested in sample tests. You only see that in the tests where the output of your function is tested against the output of a control function.
