I got the same error, and got sucked in it for a long time.
What does \xef\xbf\xbd mean?
It's not best practice to use lst.pop(idx) where idx comes from another related(mapping) list,
it may break the relationship.
Although it is OK here..
This solution depends on the order of the input arguments
