    Dictionary definition of consecutive:
    "following one after another in order and with nothing else in between". Isn't it clear?

    "consecutive" is an unfortunate choice of words, it should be "adjacent". At least to me "consecutive" means that the first letter of b is adjacent to the last letter of a. Also, the first example makes it seem "adjacent pairs", while the second shows there are no fixed pairs.
