The -e switch is correct since directories and devices are files.

If so the insturutions should be updated to "regular file". I went with -e as well.

the -e switch, tests for the existence of a filesystem object (regardless it is a regular file, a directory or a device).
Since the instructions were only referring to "file", I think the -f switch should have been used instead.
