How do you presume that your solution works just fine? Theres more than one thing wrong with it, and I wonder how you get to conclusion that it works fine.

Don't use global vars, that'll fail when your function is called more than once. In your previous code, you should return the call to your function too, otherwise, the value is lost and it'll return None

Because you're doing recursion wrong.
