It's just a JS (and many other languages) strings feature. You can also slice them.
Does this work because inputString is treated as an array when followed by square brackets?
I thought we are expected to use n.times in the function as well... some clarification may be helpful.

Which language? For which test? It means that you try to take an array element with a too big index.
I passed all the tests but when trying to submit I always got the message:
