The second call is outside of the loop, so it's not being called N times, only 2 times, which is negligible.
nice solution, one question though, wouldnt it be more efficient if you wrote on the first line: word=word.lower() so that you dont have to call the method n times? or is it the same?

How is this best practice? Not only it's completely unreadable, but it's also O(n^2) whilst it's trivial to fit O(n) which is more readable in couple of lines?
