But my advise would be to use for loops on a first version, make it pass the tests then try to peak other solutions and to integrate recursion in yours.

The only possible way to optimize is to use for loop instead of recursive.
But recursive version is more understandable.
Not a issue, simply optimize your code.
Using recursive and got "Process was terminated. It took longer than 12000ms to complete".
