I think you should build a validate solution in the test code, instead of call StringCombat.combat2 to check user's solution ;-)

I think that the messy part you're referring to is that I incorporated two discrete solutions in the solution panel instead of keeping one in the tests for validation purposes. I fixed that and a few other things. Unfortunately I could not publish the changes due to the server timing out on me repeatedly. I will try again tomorrow.

If you find other parts that can or need to be improved, especially Java8-wise please do not hesitate to suggest hints. Throwing an unuseful remark that someone's code is messy does not really help anyone be a better programmer!
