both | and || are binary (accept two operands, as opposed to one, as is the case with a unary operator), and both | and || can operate on two booleans. no bug there.

I think this is better practice than parsing values directly into 'return'

Code is good, altough I don't see why you parse to int. 'number' is already paresd into int at function call.
