i didn't add random tests because I decided to have an exact translation of the python test cases (which were approved). I will resolve to add random tests in the future regardless of whether the already approved Python translations have them or not.

OH MY! My two big takeaways from this discourse:

1. Always include representative randomised tests
2. Always triple check your code

I understand now that translators cannot afford to be as sloppy/complacent as other users that wish to plough through the kata.

And as for your decision to not approve my kata, fair play. If you know or come across any R users, point them in my direction! Take care.

Thank you so much for the responsive and constructive feedback! I programmed a coin flip to make the random tests generate squares approximately half the time, and doubled the iterations in the loop!
