Don't. The code should be not only as concice as possible, it should be readable and obvious. Your solution is better.

People should stop voting random stuff as best practice just becouse the code is short and nice. There's the 'clever' button for that.
Best practice is something else.

i don't see any reason to use built in funcions in these kind of exercises, i believe those are meant to practice, to understand how things work, taking these shortcuts doens't teach anything
