It's just something for fun. I borrowed it from laoris, who really does it better. It's basically code golf, where you try to write a program in the fewest characters possible.

I would never write code like that outside of the "for fun" aspect. (Also, the global variables give me nightmares.)

As for the minification, I do it by hand for these. It's easier to find little tricks to strip out unneeded characters.

In terms of ranks, currently the highest kata ranking is 1 kyu. Progresssing into the Dan levels will someday be possible, but we have reserved those for new, harder types of challenges that have yet to be introduced.
