What the hell do you mean the requirements are clear. One has to submit several times just to figure out the requirements based on trial and error.

this was a good one. I almost entirely over-thought it. Nice Kata.

My tests clone the regex for every iteration. Maybe this will give you an idea as to why your clones are failing? I don't want to tell you the solution to your problem, as part of solving this kata is to fix that exact problem.

I had a similar issue. Wihtout giving too much away (I think), here's a hint. In your testcase, change this:

output = regex.exec(input);
Test.assertSimilar(clone.exec(input), output, "regex.clone() gives different results (second iteration");

to this:

clone = regex.clone(); // this line is new
output = regex.exec(input);
Test.assertSimilar(clone.exec(input), output, "regex.clone() gives different results (second iteration");

I believe the tests evaluated on Submission use this strategy, so this may help you debug.
